It’s always fun for my wife, Kelly, who owns an Interior Design company at Lake Tahoe, to work with me on some of my architectural home designs from my office in Incline Village, NV.
A topic around the dinner table at Thanksgiving was a request from my Marketing Director, and founder of Weber & Associates who offers marketing consultation at Lake Tahoe, to come up with some top ideas for kitchens designed for entertaining. In addition to the functionality of the kitchen was a request to ensure the views from this gathering area were all a part of the overall design.
While enjoying a fine blend from Napa, after the Turkey was consumed, we came up with some ideas to share with her as she begins to build her dream home at Flathead Lake, Montana. (property pictured below – overlooking the Northern Rockies).
Top Ideas for Kitchens Designed for Entertaining, and Views, too!
Open Floor Plan ~
To capture the magnificent views and prepare for the company that will surely flock to the mountains to enjoy the endless assets of Montana, our first recommendation is that the design of the home, and kitchen overall, be as open as possible – while remaining functional. This style of design encourages the whole crew to get involved in party preparation while they enjoy the views from the kitchen, living room, and porches as well.
We suggest this kitchen design includes an accompanying breakfast bar that can be used for additional prep space, a perfect spot for hors d’oeuvres, or serves as an added location for a buffet display.
Other key features when it comes to designing kitchens for entertaining is to be sure there is room for more than one cook. The ‘flow’ of the workspace, storage, sink, stove, and dishwasher all come in to play – as does the aisle space to ensure all are comfortable at all times.
With the open floor plan design, we always recommend an “Island” within the kitchen. There are so many useful reasons to include this ‘extra space” for entertaining, cooking, and crafting as well.
It’s also a super spot to sit the grandkids so they can hang out with the family and have their own space. We have found that some even like to get involved in the prep process and love to swivel around on the bar stools as well!
Depending on the overall size of the kitchen, one may want to have a permanent Kitchen Island and have another prep island (on wheels) with a chopping board, and trash pull-out to use for overflow entertaining.
Bonus Entertainment Features for Kitchens ~
For those who love to entertain, we always recommend a wine room or refrigerator as part of the overall design. Some of our favorite suppliers offer a split-level feature to keep the white wines cold and reds slightly chilled.
Warming drawers are also ideal for many reasons. When you need them, they can keep the appropriate foods ready to plate. When you don’t, we use ours for extra storage in-between the holidays.
Patio Access ~
Whether you live in Lake Tahoe, NV or Flathead Lake, MT the idea of a meal without using the barbecue is almost unheard of. Thus, the reason why our recommendation for this dream home will include easy access to their expansive deck designed for entertaining. Be it winter, spring, summer, or fall, within a few steps can easily access the barbeque and outdoor kitchen.
Sun Room ~
We have so many ideas for this concept that we’ll stop here and encourage you to come back to our News section in a few weeks to hear more about architectural design ideas for the perfect sunroom.
Until then, if you are thinking about building a home in Lake Tahoe or just over the hill at our favorite new neighborhood, Clear Creek Development in Carson City, NV, Kelly and I would be more than happy to share our ideas.
May you enjoy a safe and memorable holiday season to come,
