Top Golf Courses in Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Carson City
With spring in the air in the Sierra, and a LONG white winter behind us, golf enthusiasts like myself are anxious to see the snow disappear and the bright green grass of the top golf courses in around Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Carson City come to life.
From my architectural design firm in Incline Village, I can see a touch of green appearing from the tree wells around the property. That is a good sign.
A short drive from my office, Clear Creek Tahoe’s golf course is another story – and a good one – as they are already on the links preparing for what we all hope will be a warm and sunny season to come.
In the spirit of spring and the forthcoming golf season, I thought we’d share some of our favorite golf courses in the region.
And in the meantime, we’ll continue to watch the snow melt as we continue to design golf course homes here in the mountains of the High Sierra.
Top Golf Resorts in Truckee, Lake Tahoe, and Carson City:
Clear Creek Development ~ Carson City, NV ~ Lake Tahoe’s newest golf course development is just over the hill from Lake Tahoe and is one of the leading golf course communities in the West. Two of the most established golf course designers in the nation have staked their claim in Carson City and designed the regions’ newest option for mountain golf. There’s a great quote on their website from Ben Crenshaw who combined his talents with Bill Core: “The site fit perfectly with our philosophy of creating golf that feels natural and not contrived.”
Edgewood Golf Course; Stateline, NV ~ Home of the biggest celebrity golf event in the nation, Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course hosts the prestigious American Century Celebrity Golf Classic every July on the edge of the Lake’s east shore. If the views of the Lake and surrounding High Sierra don’t interrupt your game, the course is one you will enjoy and remember for years to come. Its George Fazio design is noted as “super interesting” as the elevation is over 6,000 feet, and there are plenty of water hazards to keep you focused on your game.
Incline Village Championship Golf Course; Incline Village, NV ~ Here’s another option that is wrapped with some of the most incredible views on the planet. A snippet from their website tells the story best: “A classic Robert Trent Jones Sr. design, this classic design golf course features distinctive design and the most beautiful views imaginable. Voted #10 in Golf Advisor’s 2018 “Best Courses in the State”, 2012 and 2013 by Golf Digest magazine, and “Best State-by-State Courses” in 2016 by Golfweek magazine.” Just as impressive are the estates that wrap throughout the course that has been designed by some of the top architects in the state of Nevada.
With one of the most dramatic par 3s you will ever experience, this course just on the outskirts of historic Truckee, CA is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Throughout its forest and mountain setting, there are elevated tees every time you turn around, creeks that run right along a few of the greens, and at dusk … there are often the local coyote howling in the late-afternoon breeze.
Monday is the day to plan on playing at Schaffer’s Mill as it’s the only day that welcomes non-members to enjoy this John Harbottle III and Johnny Miller piece of paradise. They present this Club as a “tale of two golf courses” as the first nine winds through a classic Sierra meadow and the back nine typifies what you would expect from a classic mountain design with elevation changes up to 400 feet.
One of America’s top 100 golf courses originally opened as a private club yet now welcomes golf enthusiasts from all over the world to it semi-private course. Designer Jack Nicklaus did a superb job of designing the course that today is wrapped in and around some of the most exceptional architecturally-designed golf course homes in the West. It’s a tough course of 7,300 yards so perhaps put this option on your list a little later in the spring or summer when you have regained your confidence in your game!
But wait, there’s more!
For those who enjoy the game, there are so many more options to enjoy a round of golf in the Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Carson City region. Take some time to click into our local Visitors Bureau websites for more details.
In the meantime, may the melting snowpack make way for what we all hope will be another sensational golf season! And if you want a local’s point of view about which courses to tackle when, I’d be happy to share my insight. Heck, perhaps even join you for a round or two!
